Havana, Cuba 2007
Havana, Cuba 2007In the early evening, we hailed a cab to see the Canyonaso - the canon that is shot every night at 9pm in Havana. I sat in the cavernous back seat of the red ‘ 57 Chevy. My mother was born exactly at the moment of the canon shot on October 19th, 1947. We grew up believing that the canon had gone off just for my mother’s birth. I still do.
Cuba - 2007
Cuba - 2007Rob and I spent the day hiking through the lush mountains outside of Trinidad. Near the top of a hill, we got into a heated argument. The kind of irrational spat you have over some triviality that only matters because so much was unknown. He said he was done - leaving right then and flying back home. He stormed off about twenty paces ahead. Most of our cash had been stolen on the second day we were there. The details that stood between the hills where we were and home were suddenly overwhelming. Not long after, his pace slowed. He wasn’t going to leave. Not now anyway. About half way down, we came upon this ruin of a building where we could stand outside and inside at once.

North Carolina - 2017
North Carolina - 2017I had been taking care of dad for a couple of weeks. it wasn’t the plan, but at the time, life didn’t seem to stick to any plan - not mine anyway. The local doctors hadn’t been very helpful. Nobody warned me that hallucinations were part of the illness too. I found a neurologist three hours away that seemed better equipped to help with this next phase of neurological undoing. It took me 20 minutes to get Dad loaded into the car because his body would just freeze in place sometimes. Eventually I gave him some tranquilizers and his body relented to sitting in the car. He slept most of the way. About an hour into the drive, this house beckoned me. I hesitated to take the moment for myself - taking pictures is not what I was here for. But I needed the reprieve that this house gave me.

Red Hook - Brooklyn, NY - 2008
Red Hook - Brooklyn, NY - 2008It was early June and close to 100 degrees in Brooklyn that day. I met my friend Michael in Red Hook with no real plan. Michael struggled so things always had to stay loose. When we felt overheated, there were open hydrants to walk through. Michael mentioned that we were going to meet up with his friend Dennis the Fireman. It seemed fitting. We met him down by the water. He had that kind of restlessness that was magnetic. We made our way to a diner for cold iced tea and A/C. I got photos of Dennis and Michael. Neither one of them knew. Then I took this one.
